Mortal Kombat is an entertaining fan fest throughout, though with a flimsy plot and a focus on setting upcoming movies. The fan fest takes form in some cheesy one-liners, like “flawless victory” or “fatality”, which people who aren’t fans of the series may not like. On the other hand, fans could either be overjoyed to hear the line or frustrated with it being forced. I was somewhere between, thinking it was cool to listen to the lines, though sometimes a bit out of nowhere.
Like the video game Mortal Kombat, where the movie shines in its fighting and gore, there is no shortage of fatalities straight from the games. Nor is there a shortage of characters. I enjoyed seeing all the random fighters, finding myself thinking, “Ohhh, that’s Kano.” I especially enjoyed how menacing the Sub Zero character looked and how they adapted his character to the big screen. A fearsome fighter that Earthrealm cannot top.
Though it was clear the movie was setting up later films, I was entertained throughout. I would recommend Mortal Kombat for anyone looking for action and gore or is a big fan of the series. If you are looking for a movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this is the movie for you. Please don’t come in expecting some classic flick; expect to find some fighters testing their might.
