Venom Review

With my first introduction to Venom being the 1990s Spider-man series, it was hard to wrap my head around a movie without Spider-man. The anti-hero’s film had a plot that had some missing points. Though it was entertaining at times, I did sometimes feel bored.

The main plot point that didn’t work for me was Venom symbiote deciding it would stay on earth and fight the other symbiote. There wasn’t enough background to make this change believable. Also, having the evil corporation owner trying to merge everyone with the symbiotes just was a tired trope. I try not to be a movie stickler and have fun in the movie; Venom’s plot just didn’t work for me.

I enjoyed Eddie Brock’s banter with the Venom symbiote. The venom costume design did justice for the classic Venom seen in the animated series. Much more than the version of the character in Spider-man 3.

The final scene with Venom in the grocery store and Venom eating the crook head just summed up my feelings about the movie. It was odd to have a character he knew just stand there watching it happen then talk to Eddie Brock. The following carnage post-credit scene helped me avoid a sour taste in my mouth, especially the casting. Though once again, it will be weird to have carnage and Venom with no Spider-man.

The venom movie was a unique premise with certain aspects enjoyed. Overall I viewed it as a pretty average superhero movie and wouldn’t recommend it to an average viewer. Even to venom fans, I would say go in with your expectations checked.
